The Coronavirus May Cause Strokes In Young People But Doctors Don’t Know Why
Doctors suspect that the COVID-19 virus is causing strokes and heart attacks in patients. However, a direct link between the infection and these conditions has not yet been established.
Although the occurrence of these conditions along with COVID-19 has been noticed mostly in younger people, doctors believe that it is not confined to the youth alone.
One of the ideas put forth is that the virus may bind itself to the receptors on endothelial cells in veins and arteries. Clotting results as a consequence of the immune reaction of the body to the virus. On reaching the brain these clots lead to strokes.
Research to validate this theory is underway. However, doctors suggest patients who experience any stroke-like symptoms to call for help immediately.
