Coronavirus Update: Why Australia Still Accepting International Travelers

The majority of coronavirus cases recorded in Australia have come from overseas and the majority of those cases came from either Europe or cruise ships.

The spokeswoman from the Department of Health said, “Due to international travel restrictions, those individuals arriving in Australia are generally arriving via charter or repatriation flights.” But most of the people entering Australia are coming home.

Chief Medical Officer Brendan Murphy said Everybody in hotel quarantine will be tested near the start and end of their stay in quarantine, with those who do not comply in Victoria facing an extra 10 days in quarantine.

Alison McMillan Warned “This Coronavirus Pandemic is Not Over Yet”

Australia’s chief nursing and midwifery officer Alison McMillan warned “this pandemic is not over” as the country recorded 85 new cases in the past 24 hours.

She described what a “second wave” of the deadly coronavirus would look like and warned that although younger people might suffer milder symptoms, they were absolutely at risk of infection and could spread the virus to more vulnerable Australians if they were not careful.

Chinese researchers and companies are testing six experimental shots in humans and more than a dozen vaccines are in different stages of clinical trials globally.

Australian Shares Fall Over 5% On Coronavirus Impact Fears, New Zealand Slips

Australian shares slipped more than 5 percent on Thursday, as a spike in coronavirus cases across the United States and China put a damper on sentiment. 

Australia’s trade minister on Wednesday warned of a possible ban on international travelers till 2021.

In New Zealand, the gross domestic product fell 1.6% in the March quarter, the largest drop in 29 years, as coronavirus restrictions sapped economic activity.

Coronavirus Update: Victoria Records Biggest Spike In Over A Month

Victoria’s Health Minister Jenny Mikakos announced 21 new cases of coronavirus had been recorded in the state overnight – the highest surge in infections in more than a month.

The infection tally had increased to 1762, with the number of community transmission cases rising by six.

Of the 21 new cases, 15 are returned travelers in mandatory hotel quarantine.
